A Fisherman's Friend

How do they help out consumers?

Biodiversity is the foundation of every ecosystem with services to which human well-being is intimately linked. There are certainly different kinds of diversity such as Genetic Diversity which is the total number of genetic characteristics. Practically this means they adapt to different to changing environments. The oceans ecosystem is one that has been suffering the most in the past couple of years and is affecting the ocean life. The changes in the ocean are affecting not only genetic variability but ecosystem diversity. The ecosystem is slowly dying which will lead to a  ecosystem collapse. This is especially happening in the ocean's food chain. This monstrosity of a problem will not only affect the animals but what humans eat. These dolphins are extremely important to the environment, playing a key role as a regulator of fish. Hector Dolphins are known to prey mainly on old and ill fish such as red cod, flatfish and yellow-eyed mullet(Lees, L. 2011). Thus benefiting us as customers because we know we are eating the healthiest fish of the sea.

So why save a dolphin? Hector’s Dolphins are struggling to survive in a world in which humans have changed their habitats and lifestyles. So how do you affect their lifestyle? Specifically human are boating on the shore which directly correlates to increased deaths of dolphins. This is one of the many reasons why there is a huge warning for an ecosystem collapse.

What can you do?

This information, while seems insignificant, is extremely important. They help fight infectious diseases among fish populations and ensure the reproduction of fisheries resources (Lees, L. 2011 and Hector's Dolphin). Hector's dolphins are extremely cute, small and intelligent creatures, that are mammals like us. It's a species that we feel a natural affinity towards, and want to do whatever possible to be able to save them. There are so many animals around the world today that are threatened with extinction.
